Welcome to ACODE, the Australasian Council on Open, Distance and E-Learning, the peak Australasian organisation for universities engaged or interested in open, distance, flexible and e-learning.

ACODE's mission is to enhance policy and practice in open, distance, flexible and e-learning in Australasian higher education.

ACODE seeks to influence policy and practice at institutional, national and international levels through:

Girl with Computer
  1. disseminating and sharing knowledge and expertise
  2. supporting professional development and providing networking opportunities
  3. investigating, developing and evaluating new approaches
  4. advising and influencing key bodies in higher education
  5. promoting best practice.

ACODE meets three times a year for two days at meetings hosted by member institutions across Australasia.  The two day meetings usually consist of a one day workshop on a topic of policy and/or practice for Directors/Managers of university teaching and learning units or units concerned with open, distance or e-learning. A business meeting is held on the second day and usually incorporates a site visit at the host institution.

ACODE currently has over 40 institutional members that include most Australian and New Zealand universities as well as the University of the South Pacific. In recent years ACODE has extended its working relationships with other organisations including CAUL, CAUDIT, Universities Australia, the New Zealand Ministry of Education, ALTC and the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR).

Huge thanks to Sarah Lambert of University of Wollongong
by ACODE Admin.

On behalf of the ACODE Executive Committee the President wishes to thank Sarah Lambert (University of Wollongong) for her significant contribution to the ACODE Executive.

Sarah was co-opted to the ACODE Executive during 2007 to work on the Communications Strategy and to assist with advancing strategies for future communications within ACODE. Her work involved coordinating and implementing tasks to bring these plans to fruition and other contributors also valued her involvement in this area.

Organisation of the redesign and development of the new ACODE website and Moodle communications hub has been most successful and reflects the effort that Sarah has put in to make it work. ACODE members will appreciate the significant advancements now enabled by the Moodle site and no doubt enjoy the opportunity to interact on improved levels.

On behalf of us all at ACODE, we value your support and trust that your ongoing collaboration and engagement will be a rewarding experience.

Many thanks Sarah.

International Conference on the Role of Universities in Hands-On Education
by ACODE Admin.

23-29 August 2009 (Posted on behalf of the Organising Committee)

A hands-on learning experience to be held in Chiang Mai, Thailand in August 2009.
First Announcement (below) - enquiries please email RMUTL [handsonthailand@gmail.com]

The Organizing Committee for the International Conference on the Role of Universities in Hands-On Education would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the charming city of Chiang Mai in Thailand and we hope you can join with us for what promises to be an interesting as well as entertaining event.

If you share our view that there should be more to education and research than just classrooms or laboratories, then this is the conference for you. If you are a practitioner involved in work integrated learning, this is your forum. If you feel that universities and institutes should contribute more to communities by interacting and sharing knowledge, then please join us. If you also feel that universities should play a more active role in helping the disadvantaged in society, then you have come to the right place and we would like to hear from you and share your experience.

We also believe that a conference such as this should provide an opportunity to meet like-minded people and learn new ideas in a relaxed atmosphere. Rather than spend all your time in a meeting room, we also believe that conferences should be a mixture of some serious work as well as some good fun and we have prepared a program accordingly. In addition, an interesting array of Invited Speakers awaits to enlighten us with their experiences. There will also be specialist workshops on wine and river ecology.

Please take the time to visit conference web site:

and take a look at what is on offer.
