Academic Integrity Audit Project

The issue of plagiarism is of interest to ACODE member institutions, including policy makers, teachers and support staff.  As the peak body associated with practical and policy issues in higher education in Australasia, ACODE funded an audit of academic integrity and plagiarism issues in Australia and New Zealand.  This project was carried out through the Teaching and Learning Centre at Murdoch University.

The aim of this project was to conduct an Australasian audit of initiatives about academic integrity, including plagiarism and measures intended to reduce its frequency, culminating in the development of a repository of academic integrity resources.

Professionalisation Project

'Portfolios for Flexible Learning Designers/Developers'

Aims and significance

The aim of this project was to identify the nature of the evidence, and from whom and how it can be gathered, that flexible learning designers/developers can use for the preparation of portfolios for academic promotion and professional development.

The significance of this investigation was that it met a dire need in the higher education sector to identify flexible learning designer/developers as a profession with an articulated career path. This project identified a range of key parameters to guide the construction of portfolios that effectively reflect their roles, responsibilities and expertise. In turn, the development of quality portfolios informed the development of benchmarking for best practice and the identification of career paths for this emerging profession. The project:

  1. Identified a range of stakeholders with whom designers/developers work
  2. Identified a range of artifacts which can serve as evidence for portfolios
  3. Identified processes by which designers/developers can gather evidence to support the development of portfolios
  4. Produced a resource 'How to prepare a portfolio for academic promotion and professional development’ for the ACODE website, a report to ACODE, an ACODE workshop, and a conference paper.

Broadcasting live/recorded lectures

A colleague at Murdoch asks:
Has any university been recording lectures at a home campus and then playing them for students during the classtime at a satellite campus? What feedback has been received from staff and students?
Do any universities record at the home campus and then ask students at satellite campus to view the recording plus attend a lecture where they are presented with additional content or activities? If yes, do students feel that they have an increased workload with having to watch the recordings and attend a lecture?

Any relevant information would be appreciated.

Using laptops for exams

Hi everyone,

I heard a throwaway comment from someone at ACODE 51 about how students are doing their exams on computers rather than handwriting. There was also the article in last week's Higher Ed Supplement at http://www.theaustralian.com.au/higher-education/laptops-pass-the-big-exam/story-e6frgcjx-1225798847988. It just seems dumb that the only time we require students to use handwriting is for a high-stakes activity such as an exam.

What is the current state of play with regards to doing exams on computers? Are you doing anything at your university?
